Ruffling The Feathers Of Our Competition

Well it seems that we have been doing some feather ruffling of late.

One of our competitor sites pagerank10.co.uk, has taken it upon themselves to accuse us of doing activities which they do not wish to be affiliated with and of running our website in an underhand way.

Well i have no idea as to what exactly they are refering but i am doing my best to get to the bottom of this and find out exactly what they meant.

The even went as far as to permanently ban our ip address from their forum so as to keep us from reading it at all or from signing up under a different id.

Crazy as they could never stop us getting into their forum and reading it if we really were that bothered and wanted to (which we dont lol).

Anyway i will keep you all updated as i find out more.

Great Way To Get One Way Backlinks

Well i was surfing the net today as usual, looking for new ways to get some more backlinks for some sites i run and i came accross this great little site.

Ok well the good part is that you link to about 4 sites but the potential for hundreds of sites to get your link over time, you never get linked from any of the sites your linking to so your always getting unique one way links.

On top of that they dont let your site be chosen too often within a short space of time, as any good seo knows, gaining too many backlinks over a short period of time can set up red flags with the search engines so a more natural slow build up of links is much better.

1. What is PageRank and why should I care about it?

PageRank is a formula that assigns a value to every page in the Google index. Google displays search results based on an algorithm which includes the value of PageRank. So the higher your site's PageRank, the more likely it is that you will receive a top listing on the search result page when someone types in the keywords for your site.

2. How can I view the PageRank of my own or other websites?

It's very simple to see anyone's PageRank. Just download and install the Google toolbar. It's a very quick and easy install. Just be sure to choose the Advanced option during the install so the PageRank of each site you visit will be displayed on the toolbar.

3. How is PageRank calculated?

I've seen a formula for PageRank posted on Internet websites and forums but have failed to see anyone give a satisfactory explanation of the formula. The formula appears so complex you would probably have to be a mathematician to even have a chance to decipher it anyway. It looks something like this:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

I will attempt to explain it for you in plain English. Basically it works like this. The more links that point to your website the higher your PageRank will be. The higher the PageRank of the referring page that has your link on it, the more PageRank you receive from Google. For every outgoing link that a page has, the value of those links drop. So for example, a link from a page with a PageRank of 4, and only 3 other links, is worth more than a page with a PageRank of 5 and 100 links. It is also believed that Google assigns more value to a link that comes from a site with similar content. So as you can see, there are many variables when calculating PageRank.

4. How do I increase my PageRank?

Again, PageRank can be increased by the number of incoming links to your website from other sites on the Internet. In addition, it requires anywhere from five to seven times more to get from one level of PageRank to the next.

So for example, (and this is not a true formula) if 100 PageRank 3 sites with a link to your page give you a PageRank of 4, then it would take around 500 more PageRank 3 sites to link to you before you became PageRank 5. However if you had 1 link from a PageRank 8 site, that might be enough to give a higher PageRank all by its self. It's really all relative and trying to figure it out will simply drive you mad, so don't bother. The best thing you can do is obtain as many quality incoming links from other sites with similar content as you possibly can.

Another important factor is the number of pages on your site. The more pages on your site, the higher potential you have to gain in PageRank. More pages doesn't mean you will get a higher PageRank only that you won't hit a ceiling. Apparently Google has a cut off point somewhere on the highest PageRank it will give to sites with a low number of pages.

5. When will my PageRank be updated or change?

According to the Google website, they update the index about once a month. However if you spend any amount of time reading search engine forums, you will find that results vary for every webmaster. PageRank may not update or may change drastically for a long period of time which is often times unexplainable. Usually as long as you follow good web site optimization techniques and maintain enough quality incoming links, the index will eventually assign your website PageRank and adjust any changes which may have been made in error.

As 2006 faced its last weeks, Google was the favorite among search engine. Most of Google's popularity is credited to its preferred form of search engine optimization, a trademarked program Google dubbed Google PageRank.

Google Pagerank Search Engines operates under a democratic nature by determining web relevance with links which are considered votes. Each vote counts, but not all the votes are counted the same. During its analyses Google looks at more than just the volume of votes a webpage receives, it also takes into account the page that cast the vote.

“Important” sites help to make other sites “important.” In other words if a high ranking site offers the link then Google counts this vote more heavily. Thus a link for a site in the top ten can help your website, while a link from a site that is low in rank, or doesn’t relate to your site, does very little to improve your search engine ranking.

Google has designed Google PageRank to be an eight-unit measurement. It displays the value PageRank places on each website directly beside each website it displays.

Why does the page matter as opposed to the volume? Due to spamdexing Google had to make its analysis stricter. People were swapping links with one another in mass quantities, or buying them from other websites. To combat this Google made the quality of the link outweigh the actual quantity. In 2005, it designed and activated a program called nofollow, a program they designed to allow webmasters and bloggers to create links that PageRank would ingnore. The same system was also used to keep spamdexing to a minumum.

Content analysis

Anyone who surfs the net knows that “important” pages mean nothing if the do not suit your needs. This is why in addition with PageRank, Google uses sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are relevant to your query.

Many SEOs are fixated with search engine ranking and this is understandable as it is one of the best ways to gain traffic, but while they are out there trying to get links from high PageRanking pages, they need to keep in mind that PageRanking alone is not enough.

To Check PageRank is essentially, only a score that represents the value of a page, as Google determines it. Getting a link to your pages from a high PR page will add some value to your page. But that does not take into account the context of the link -- the words in the link -- the anchor text. Your SEO plan should contain more than just PageRanking in order for you to have long term success on the internet.

If you can improve your Google Page rank then you will have a sure-fire way of improving your listing position. Google states very clearly that their PageRank and your link density is a very important part of how they decide your listing position for any keyword.

There are steps you can take to improve that and use an approximation to the Google PageRank formula to calculate how successful you are being. However, no one really knows what is required to get from one page rank figure to the next. If it takes 10 linking points to get a page rank at all, it will likely take a lot more to get from 1 to 2. It might take hundreds of thousand to get from 5 to 6, but many sites seem to get to page rank 3 and then stop.

Page rank is a measurement of the relative number of links to your webpage and the importance of the sites making these links, compared to the number of links leaving your web page. Page rank is what it says. It is a ranking of your web pages, not your whole website. This is particularly useful since it lists individual pages on your website, not the whole website.

These links need not be from outside sources, since internal page linking also counts. If one of your pages is linked to your home page, your home page gets a share of that page’s rank. The share decreases for each other page that the page in question is linked to. Each page in your website starts off with a page rank of 1. That then increases or reduces according to your internal linking strategy, and it is possible to design that strategy to provide as much PR as possible to one or more pages in your website.

Once you have optimized your internal links, you should then try to achieve as many links back to your website as possible from other websites. Keep in mind that you should try to get other web pages to link to specific pages on your site, that you have chosen either for their relevance to the keyword in question, or because that is the page that you want to get listed highest in Google.

Also keep in mind that websites with a very good page rank on their home page might be providing you with a link from a page deep in their site that has a very low PR, or even zero. A links page, for example, with only one link to the page but a hundred out will provide with next to no benefit. If the link is reciprocated, you could be giving that website more page rank points than you are getting back.

A Better Way To Increase Your PageRank

A lot of web publishers believe that the best way to gain a high PageRank, or PR, is to entice highly ranked sites to link to them. The theory is that if a high ranking site links to you, it shares its PageRank. This sounds great on the surface, but there more to it than that.

In reality, Google's algorithm for arriving at PageRank dictates that the amount of ranking a page can pass along to those it links to is its own rank for the page in question divided by the number of outbound links on that page.

This, in a nutshell, means that if you managed to get a site with a PR of 8 to link to you, you won't get a ranking of 8 or even close to it. For example, if this site already has 3 outbound links and you make 4, the PR passed to each site would be 2 units, rather than 8. On top of this, the high PageRank is very likely on the site's home page, not its internal links page, where your link would appear. The PR that's passed on depends only on the PR of the page where the link appears.

Since a lot of higher PageRank sites also happen to have a lot of outbound links, the truth of the matter is these are not always the best places to turn for reciprocation.

A better way does exist. It involves targeting sites that have modest PR ratings, but that are likely to improve. As long as the sites have good content and are reputable, they can pay off very well. Targeted lower PageRank sites might not seem like a good strategy, but it is.

A host of reasons exist as to why these lower PR sites can pay off. The biggest lies in the fact it is generally much easier to get these sites to put up links. Plus, when they do, they are often willing to use keywords in the links themselves. Also, there are more inclined to put links on their front page. Another advantage to these sites that they probably don't already have a bunch of outbound links. The appeal of these reasons is strong, but the most compelling is the potential these sites offer. If high quality sites are chosen, they can grow in PR ranking and your site can grow along with them.

It is wise to research sites to target for reciprocal links though. Stay clear of sites that have PageRank bars in the white or gray. This indicates they have little or no ranking. It could also mean they've been banned. Gray sites in particular can be bad news.

Should you still be on the fence about this strategy, look at the numbers. If an incoming link comes from a page with a ranking of 8 and only has one other link, you'll get a PR boost of 4. A page with a ranking of 6 with a total of 30 links, yours included, will give you .2. The math clearly indicates that the lower PageRank strategy is best.

Well we have been working hard on the site, constantly tweaking everything and adding new features all the time, google has now indexed a 2nd page of our website.

We hope that this is the start of many more to come, we are also getting alot of backlinks and posts on some forums and discussion boards, and there are even several other sites out there that i have found that have tried to do this beofre us and as of yet there is nly one that is doing any good at it, good luck to them all, we hope you succeed with your experiment.

Indexed By Google At Last!!

Well just a quick update to say we have just been checking our stats and google has on some of its datacenters already started indexing our website.

The more links we get the better position we will be in the serps and the better ranking we will get so if everyone who wants to participate keep up the good work linking to us and sending us traffic, posting to our forum etc

Well yet again we have more updates to the site, we have a new forum up and running.

The forum is intended for the discussion of our sites aims and goals, achievements etc and to discuss things like search engine optimization techniques for google, yahoo and msn.

At 9:44am EST on Thursday, 07 June The Google Bot hit our site for the first time.

This blog page was the first page spidered, sicne then Google has spidered almost all of the site so far.

We will be keeping our eyes out for when google indexes us.
